Former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson has teamed up with former Vice President Walter Mondale to announce a new group aimed at solving the state’s fiscal crisis.

“We’re in a deadlock. The government has broken down. We need to get it unfrozen,” said Mondale.

“Our hope is that through the talents and competency of this committee, we can have some kind of proposal before the end of the week,” said Carlson. “This would put before the people of Minnesota, and the Governor and the Legislature, a third approach.”

The new group, which includes finance commissioners from previous administrations and business leaders, has been given access to the state’s current finance commissioner Jim Schowalter. Neither Carlson nor Mondale will be directly involved in the work of the group.
