Governor Mark Dayton and other political luminaries will speak this morning at the Joint Legislative Conference for Minnesota Cities, Counties, School Boards, and Townships at the Crowne Plaza Riverfront Hotel in downtown St. Paul. More than 500 local officials from around the state will reportedly: hear from state leaders about proposals to address the massive state budget shortfall and the implications for local government; learn more about the three legislative commissions on government redesign and their efforts to improve service delivery, enhance collaboration, and help all levels of government save money; take messages to the Capitol and visit with legislators.

House Majority Leader Matt Dean, House Minority Leader Paul Thissen, and Senate Minority Leader Tom Bakk will speak between 8:45 and 9:45, followed by State Auditor Rebecca Otto at 9:45. Dayton will deliver the keynote address between 11:45 and 12:45.

DFL Senators Tom Bakk and John Marty held a news conference in the Minnesota State Capitol today where they attacked the GOP-controlled Senate’s Omnibus Tax Bill, which includes deep cuts to property tax relief programs such as Local Government Aid and the renters’ property tax refund program. Early analysis of the bill suggests it would raise property taxes by $422 million over the next two years.

Gov Dayton Signs Tax Reductions into Law

Governor Mark Dayton holds a ceremony to sign HF 79/SF 47 into law. This legislation will provide $13 million in state tax reductions for college students and their parents, teachers, businesses and other tax payers by adopting most federal tax law changes made for the 2010 tax year. The Legislation also takes action, as the Governor urged in a letter in late February, to stop the delay of tax refund payments to Minnesota businesses. He will be joined at the bill signing ceremony by Senator Julianne Ortman, Senator John Marty, Representative Greg Davids and Representative Paul Marquart.
