Video Shows Walz Correct: Demmer Wants To Partially Privatize Social Security.

October 14, 2010 by Michael McIntee CD1, Fact Check Comments Off

Does Republican candidate for Congress Randy Demmer want to partially privatize Social Security as Congressman Tim Walz claimed in a recent debate? During the debate Demmer disputed that notion

Walz tells The UpTake’s Mike McIntee that Demmer made the privatization statement earlier this year while he was courting conservative votes to win the Republican nomination and that statement was captured on video. We asked to see that video.

The Walz campaign provided video of Demmer’s call for social security privatization. In it Demmer says

“And I do believe, when you call privatization of health c..social security .. I got a… it’s kind of more simple as far as I’m concerned. It’s having control of the dollars I’m investing someplace. And yes I would, I would favor the option of me being able to do that. Of you being able to do that. In other words when you’re putting your money into your social security account, I would support you having the option if you so choose to have a say in how those monies are invested and what kind of return you might get and have some choices to where you put it.”

Demmer made it clear that he was not talking about changing social security for older Americans because that would be “pulling the rug out from underneath them.”

Candidate Demmer Makes A Strange Claim About Israel

October 12, 2010 by Michael McIntee CD1 1 Comment

Israel was founded in 1948. However, according to the Republican candidate running for Minnesota’s First District Congressional seat, Israel has apparently been around for much longer. Randy Demmer says “peace talks have been going on between Israel and Palestine for thousands…probably a thousand years.”

Independence Party candidate Steve Wilson follows up saying he doesn’t think it has been that long. Both are running against Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Congressman Tim Walz. The remarks were made at a debate in Mankato, Minnesota.

Candidate Wilson Needs A Poll Before He Answers The Question

October 12, 2010 by Michael McIntee Campaign Finance, CD1 Comments Off

One of the landmark decisions out of the US Supreme Court this year was Citizens United, which made it easier for corporations to spend money to influence elections. We brought up the topic with Independence Party Congressional candidate Steven Wilson after a debate against his opponents in Minnesota’s first congressional district. Wilson tried very hard to not answer a simple question, should companies such as Cambria which is located in Minnesota’s first congressional district, be called out or admonished by candidates for spending money to influence elections. Wilson’s ultimate answer was that even months after the U.S. Supreme Court decision he had not studied the issue and he would need to poll people on his website before he made any decision.

Furious & Heated-Walz And Demmer Debate Highlights

October 12, 2010 by Michael McIntee CD1, Economy/Jobs, Health Care Comments Off

Republican Randy Demmer’s claim that Congressman Tim Walz knows nothing about business because he hasn’t run one set off a furious response from Walz at a debate in Mankato Monday night.  Walz, who says he has run a non-profit corporation, said if you use that logic then Demmer knows nothing about education (Walz is a teacher) and knows nothing about defense (Walz served in the National Guard).  The two heatedly sparred over health care and spending.

Here are about nine minutes of highlights from the debate.  The full debate can be found here.

The Minnesota Farmers Union announced on Tuesday it is endorsing Congressman Tim Walz (DFL) for re-election in Minnesota’s first district. The MFU also endorsed Congressman Collin Peterson (DFL) for re-election in the seventh district.

Walz talked about his opponents’ “short sighted” energy policies. “How quickly they forget the ‘drill here, drill now’ people.” Walz told the Farmfest crowd. “That was their other solution last time on this.”

Walz faces Republican Randy Demmer and Steve Wilson of the Independence Party.

Republican Representatives John Kline, Michele Bachmann were invited, but did not attend the Minnesota Congressional debate at Farmfest on Tuesday. However, Republican and Independence Party challengers to Representative Tim Walz and Collin Peterson did make the trip to a very steamy farm field near Redwood Falls,Minnesota for the one-hour forum on agricultural issues.

Kline’s opponent in the November election will be either DFL endorsed candidate Dan Powers or Powers’ August 10th primary opponent Shelley Madore. Madore participated in the Farmfest debate. Powers was invited, but declined because he had a prior commitment.

Bachmann’s opponent is DFL endorsed candidate Tarryl Clark who commented after the debate on Bachmann’s absence.
