Corporate Media Missing Stories As Corporations Quash Coverage

April 16, 2011 by Jacob Wheeler Massachusetts, Media Comments Off

Videos by Sam Mayfield

The bad news is corporate owned media did a poor job reporting the news during the Egyptian revolution. The even worse news is that one of the few independent media tools that did get the news out from Egypt is being threatened in a place you might least expect it — the supposed free speech leader of the world, the United States.

As you might expect, members of the independent media spoken to by The UpTake at the National Conference For Media Reform generally had low opinions of the corporate-owned media.

Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman said in Egypt corporate media looked “like they were under the covers in their hotel room with a lower third that said ‘reporting from an undisclosed location’” while independent media was broadcasting out in the open to the masses.

Free Speech TV’s Don Rojas faults the corporate media for reinforcing the false concept of “objective” reporting. What the corporate-owned media really offers, Rojas says, is a corporate view of the news, which is hardly objective.

But attendees at the National Conference For Media Reform also are worried about another corporate ill: the control corporations want to exert over a tool citizens and independent media have been using to go around corporate owned news channels. That tool is your cell phone.

Free and Open Internet a Non-partisan Issue

April 14, 2011 by Jacob Wheeler DC, Massachusetts, Media, Net Neutrality Comments Off

At the National Conference for Media Reform, the UpTake’s Sam Mayfield spoke with Craig Aaron, the new CEO of Free Press, who says he entered this line of work because he cares deeply about journalism and the free and open Internet. “If we don’t fix media, then we won’t be able to fix any issue that we care about,” says Aaron.

During the conference in Boston, House Republicans voted to throw out the FCC’s Net Neutrality rules. Ironically, Free Press also opposed those rules because, they opine, the rules weren’t strong enough. Aaron laments that “we’ve taken an issue like the free and open Internet — which isn’t partisan at all — and it’s being framed in Washington as a government takeover, when that couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Rep. Markey To GOP: HANDS OFF THE INTERNET

April 12, 2011 by Michael McIntee DC, Environment, Massachusetts, Net Neutrality Comments Off

Representative Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) delivers a fiery speech to journalists gathered at the National Conference For Media Reform in Boston. He says Republicans in Congress are trying to shut down the internet at the same time they are trying to shut down the government. Repealing the Internet protections the FCC has put into place would allow corporations to take us back 20 years with higher rates and less innovation. He says the message from people to Republicans in Congress needs to be simple: HANDS OFF THE INTERNET.

Key quote from Representative Markey:

“On Wednesday, they brought to the House Floor a bill to repeal the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases. Then yesterday, they passed a resolution to repeal the FCC’s ability to ensure the openness of the Internet.

“So as time ticked down Friday afternoon, Republicans in Congress were trying to shut down the Internet and the federal government – simultaneously.

“They didn’t shut down the government, and we’re all going to make sure they don’t shut down the Internet either!

“We’re going to need to organize, mobilize and get energized to fend off all these assaults.

“That’s because GOP used to stand for Grand Old Party. But now it stands for Gang of Polluters. Now it stands for Greed Over Principle. Now it stands for Gas and Oil Party.”

Effect, Cause, White Stripes, Rep Edwards And Indy Media

April 12, 2011 by Michael McIntee Maryland, Massachusetts, Media, Net Neutrality Comments Off

Representative Donna Edwards (D-Maryland) said she left Republicans scratching their heads last week when she quoted lyrics from a White Stripes song on the House of Representatives floor. She read the lyrics to the White Stripes’ “Effect And Cause” to chide Republicans for their attempt to shut down the Federal government.

This weekend, Edwards told independent journalists gathered in Boston at the National Conference For Media Reform that Washington needs more politicians who aren’t willing to “play the game”. She advocated for keeping the Internet open and railed against corporate influence in politics.

“Corporations can do all the business that they want”, Edwards said, “but they don’t have to control our politics.”

Testing out The Cube and the Panasonic AG-AF 100 live combo

At The UpTake we’re known for live video coverage of big events. Not just the ones that are staged for the media, but also those events that are much more unscripted and chaotic. Until now, providing live video of protests and fast moving stories has meant sacrificing video or audio quality and technical control. No longer. The UpTake is teaming up with Livesteam and Teradek at the National Conference for Media reform to demonstrate the latest cutting edge technology. We’re delivering HD quality video and audio live from just about anywhere and we’re unplugged.

No wires. No strings. No ethernet cables. Only a prosumer camera (Panasonic AG-AF100), the Cube from Teradek and new special integration with Livestream. We push a button and a few seconds later we’re live. Livestream CEO Max Haot was nice enough to lend us one of their units for the week and we are giving it a real shakedown.

How does it look? Here’s a side by side comparison between the livestream video and the video recorded an SD card at 720p.

Above the livestream version of Tim Karr, Campaign Director for Free Press talks about the National Conference for Media Reform that begins today (Friday) in Boston. Below, the camera recorded video uploaded to blip.tv.

Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown Begs David Koch For Money

March 8, 2011 by Jacob Wheeler Campaign Finance, Labor/Unions, Massachusetts, Wisconsin Comments Off

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker isn’t the only one indebted to the Koch brothers for his political success — and asking for more. At the public dedication of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s David H. Koch Integrative Cancer Institute last Friday, Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA, who occupies the late Ted Kennedy’s seat) effusively thanked conservative billionaire David Koch for supporting his election in 2010 and made a plea for help in his re-election campaign next year. Koch directly gave the National Republican Senatorial Committee $30,400 in November 2009, and the Koch Industries PAC threw in $15,000 to NRSC plus $5,000 more directly to Brown right before Brown’s special election. In the video exchange, Brown thanks Koch and his wife Julia (off-camera) for their support, saying “I can certainly use it again.”

Boston Rally: People Get Thrown Out, Banks Get Bailed Out

February 27, 2011 by Michael McIntee Labor/Unions, Massachusetts Comments Off

Video by Chris Priest
Workers in Wisconsin wouldn’t be facing layoffs if the state’s finances were in better shape. One of the reasons states and the federal government are facing deficits is because many large corporations pay no federal income tax at all. In Boston on Saturday US Uncut rallied to support Wisconsin workers and called upon corporations to start paying their fair share of taxes.
About 50 people showed up at 9am to march to the Boston Bank of America. Police were on hand not to hinder, but help the protesters. They drove along the march on the way to the bank, stopping traffic to help them get through.

More pictures and a protester’s account of what happened. … Continue Reading
