Minnesota 9/11 Truth rallied in the rotunda of the Minnesota State Capitol as the larger remembrance celebration proceeded on the main steps. The 9/11 Truth Movement is a growing collection of architects, engineers, pilots, other technical people and some conspiracy theorists who question many of the conclusions reached by the government’s 9/11 investigation committee. Critics, including the mainstream media, dismiss their claims as unsubstantiated conspiracy theories. But a number of groups, with varying degrees of veracity, continue to call for the reopening of the 9/11 Commission investigation.

Friday night was a good one for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transexual activists. New York’s legislature approved same-sex marriage and Minnesota used light to paint rainbows on the I-35W bridge, symbolically supporting the GLBT community during “pride week”. The New York same-sex marriage law has been delayed for years by Republicans. In Minnesota, it turns out the bridge lighting has been also delayed for years by Republicans.

We’ve never forgotten the tragedy. We’ve never forgotten the loss of life. We’ve never forgotten the courage that was shown by the NYPD, by the firefighters, by the first responders.”

House Ethics Considers Rangel Sanctions On Thursday

November 16, 2010 by Michael McIntee DC, New York Comments Off

On Monday, Representative Charles Rangel walked out on the House Ethics Committee investigating 13 charges against him and was rewarded with being found guilty of 11 of them. On Thursday Rangel gets another opportunity to appear before the full Ethics Committee and plea his case as it considers what, if any, penalty it should impose on the Democratic Congressman from New York.

If he decides to not waive his right to the noon hearing, Rangel will get 30 minutes to present his side.  The committee’s Chief Counsel Blake Chisam will also get 30 minutes to present the other side.  No witnesses may be called unless a majority of the committee votes to allow a witness.

After Thursday’s hearing, the Ethics Committee will meet in closed session to discuss what penalty it will recommend to the full House which must approve any sanctions.

Rep. Rangel Guilty On 11 Ethics Counts

November 16, 2010 by Michael McIntee Campaign Finance, DC, New York, US House Live Comments Off

The House Ethics Subcommittee finds Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY) guilty on 11 counts of ethics charges brought against him. Committee Chair Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) said the committee found “consensus” on the 11 charges. The committee was originally considering 13 charges against Rangel, however charges four and five were combined reducing the charges to 12. The Committee did not reach consensus on charge number three, and that one was dropped.

The subcommittee will meet in closed session this afternoon to approve the language on its findings. Lofgren says she will notify the ranking member of the full ethics committee so a sanction hearing can be scheduled. Rangel will have an opportunity to address the sanction hearing. It is not known if he will appear or not.

Once the Ethics Committee decides what sanctions, if any, to take against Rangel, the recommendation will be sent to the full House for a vote.

Possible sanctions include censure, a fine and or denial of privileges.

Ethics Committee Deliberates Rangel Charges

November 15, 2010 by Michael McIntee DC, New York Comments Off

House Ethics Committee members are now deliberating the 13 counts of ethics rules violations against New York Congressman Charles Rangel.  Rangel surprised the committee by walking out after stating he didn’t have any legal representation. A law firm that had been preparing Rangel’s defense suddenly quit the case a few weeks ago after Rangel had spent nearly two million dollars on them.

The committee decided to go ahead with the hearing anyhow since hundreds of pieces of evidence had already been submitted.  After determining that there were no genuine material issues with the facts in the case, Committee Chair Representative Zoe Lofgren of California announced the committee would go into executive session to consider and vote on each of the counts against Rangel. Should the committee find Rangel violated the ethics rules, it will hold a full separate hearing on possible sanctions.
