Obama:Bailout Worked-Chrysler Profitable, Paid-Back, Private

June 4, 2011 by Michael McIntee DC, Economy/Jobs, Ohio Comments Off

Speaking to the American people from a Chrysler plant in Toledo, Ohio, President Obama commended the work of America’s dedicated autoworkers, who have helped reinvigorate the domestic auto industry. Each of The Big Three automakers is now turning a profit, and the domestic auto industry continues to add shifts and create new jobs across the country.

When President Obama decided to lend a hand to the American automotive industry shortly after taking office, it was with the understanding that these great manufacturers would have to restructure, modernize and position themselves to thrive in a competitive global marketplace.

Now, just a few years after the American auto industry teetered on the brink of collapse, America’s great manufacturers of yesterday have emerged as some of the great manufacturers of today.

Congressman Kucinich Sees an Ascendant Labor Movement in Madison

March 13, 2011 by Jacob Wheeler Labor/Unions, Ohio, War/Peace, Wisconsin Comments Off

Video by Chuck Olsen

Following his appearance as part of an all-star progressive lineup at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison tonight, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich (Dem.) spoke to The UpTake’s Jacob Wheeler about the resurgent labor movement in Wisconsin and elsewhere, and how it has slumbered in the past 17 years since the North American Free Trade Agreement was signed in 1994. Kucinich lamented what little the Democratic Party has done to support organized labor, and chastised President Obama for not being here to lead the movement. Kucinich expressed worry that his home state of Ohio — which just passed similar union-busting legislation — will soon be “selling everything that’s not nailed down”. In light of the fact that a Democratic president in the White House has yet to set a timetable for ending the war in Afghanistan, Kucinich continues to press for a “Department of Peace” to replace the “Defense Department”.

Workers Defend Their Rights in Wisconsin & Ohio

Video by New Left Media

In this elegantly produced video of workers’ rights demonstrations in Madison and Columbus, New Left Media interviews protesters who have been locked out in the cold, as well as a Democratic state senator and former Democratic state congresswoman, officials from SEIU and AFSCME, organizers detailing the truth behind Wisconsin’s SB-11 and Ohio’s SB-5, and union members, police and assembly members who are willing to concede wages but won’t budge on collective bargaining rights. New Left Media also explores the GOP’s true motive for attacking union rights in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, Tennessee and Florida — not to solve state deficits, but to undercut a primary funding source of the Democratic Party.

Workers Protest in Columbus, Ohio — GRITtv Special, Day 3

More GRITtv

This video is part of our special coverage from the workers’ protests in Madison, Wisconsin and Columbus, Ohio — a result of collaboration with Free Speech TV and WORT FM in Madison.

As thousands protest Ohio governor John Kasich’s plan to gut public workers’ collective bargaining rights, Brian Rothenberg of ProgressOhio notes that the election that put Kasich in charge was the result of a lot of people staying home out of frustration, and that those same people have been awakened by the moves of the new administration. Like governors in Wisconsin and Indiana, Kasich’s early moves have sparked widespread anger, and a newly invigorated protest movement that isn’t just made up of union members is striking back.

Laura spoke to Rothenberg in Columbus, Ohio during the protests.

“I think we’ve been inspired by Madison; I think we’ve been inspired by Egypt, frankly,” says Ohio state representative Nickie Antonio from the statehouse in Columbus, where thousands of protesters were locked out yesterday when they attempted to protest Governor John Kasich’s legislation to end their collective bargaining rights. … Continue Reading

Replay-President Obama On Economy “It’s Still Fear Vs. Hope”

September 8, 2010 by Michael McIntee Economy/Jobs, Ohio, White House Live Comments Off

President Barack Obama has been stopping through the Midwest to stump for the middle class: the resurgence of which, he said, will revive the economy. His latest stop was outside of Cleveland, Ohio, the site of one of his final rallies in fall of 2008.

Obama talked about hope for struggling families through financial reform, expanded health care coverage, and college education that’s affordable. He also talked about the Republicans’ hope that Obama be defeated, their hope to channel voter fear. He again singled out John Boehner, Ohio U.S. Representative and Minority House Leader.

“They’re making the same calculation they made just before the inauguration: if I fail, they win. Well, they might think this will get them were they need to go in November, but it won’t get our country where it needs to go in the long run,” Obama said.
