President Obama talks about the end of the Iraq war during his weekly address

Click Picture to watch President Obama's weekly address.

President Obama says that the death of Moammar Qadhafi in Libya and the announcement that troops from Iraq will return home by the end of the year are strong reminders that the United States has renewed its leadership in the world.

He says the role of our brave pilots and crews has given the Libyan people a chance to seek a democratic future for their children, and after a decade of war in Iraq, the United States is moving forward and focusing on strengthening the economy and security at home.

That is why President Obama is calling on Congress to pass the American Jobs Act to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, give working families a tax break, and put teachers back in our classrooms and cops on the beat.

He says we must bring the same sense of urgency to revitalizing our economy that our troops took to their fight, which is why President Obama is urging Republicans and Democrats to work together to pass the American Jobs Act now to put the American people back to work.

Qaddafi’s Rule Over Says Obama, Time To Lay Down Arms In Libya

President Obama address press in Martha's Vinyard, MA on Libya

Click picture to watch video of President Obama's statement on Libya

President Obama says it is time to transition to a democratic Libya. Speaking during his vacation at Martha’s Vinyard, Massachusetts President Obama told the press:

“Although it’s clear that Qaddafi’s rule is over, he still has the opportunity to reduce further bloodshed by explicitly relinquishing power to the people of Libya and calling for those forces that continue to fight to lay down their arms for the sake of Libya.

“As we move forward from this pivotal phase, the opposition should continue to take important steps to bring about a transition that is peaceful, inclusive and just. As the leadership of the TNC has made clear, the rights of all Libyans must be respected. True justice will not come from reprisals and violence; it will come from reconciliation and a Libya that allows its citizens to determine their own destiny.

“In that effort, the United States will be a friend and a partner. We will join with allies and partners to continue the work of safeguarding the people of Libya. As remaining regime elements menace parts of the country, I’ve directed my team to be in close contact with NATO as well as the United Nations to determine other steps that we can take. To deal with the humanitarian impact, we’re working to ensure that critical supplies reach those in need, particularly those who have been wounded.”

Andy Carvin: Live-tweeter of revolutions

April 13, 2011 by Chuck Olsen Libya, Maryland, Media, War/Peace, World Comments Off

NPR Senior Strategist Andy Carvin tweets and re-tweets updates from the Middle East revolutions 16+ hours a day, 7 days a week.

The UpTake chats with Andy about how he finds his sources, how he balances his repoire with those sources while keeping a journalistic detachment, and how he doesn’t hold back on having a human reaction to the horrors of war.

One of Andy’s closest sources in Libya was Mohammed Nabous, recently killed while livestreaming after a missile strike near Benghazi. As Andy says, “It’s a dangerous dangerous place to be a citizen journalist. Yet people are still managing to get information out, including videos and photos and detailed stories. It’s just extraordinary work they’re able to do under such difficult circumstances.

Obama: US Prevents Libyan “Humanitarian Catastrophe”

March 26, 2011 by Michael McIntee DC, Libya, War/Peace, World Comments Off

President Obama tells the American people that the military mission in Libya is succeeding even as responsibility is transferred to our NATO allies and partners. Qaddafi’s air defenses have been taken out, his forces are no longer advancing across the country, and in places like Benghazi, his forces have been pushed back. The President says every American can be proud of the lives we have saved and of the service of our men and women in uniform who once again have stood up for our interests and our ideals.

US Fighter Jet Crashes In Libya

March 23, 2011 by Michael McIntee Libya, War/Peace, World Comments Off

Two US Airmen are safe after their fighter jet crashed during a mission over northeast Libya. The F-15 E strike Eagle went down Monday. The two pilots were able to eject safely from the aircraft and are back with US forces. They reportedly suffered only minor injuries. Military officials say the F-15 crashed after the plane malfunctioned and hostile fire did not play any role in the crash. Navy officials say coalition airstrikes have rendered Libya’s air defenses ineffective.

US Attacks Stop Libyan Regime Ground Forces

March 21, 2011 by Michael McIntee DC, Libya, War/Peace, World Comments Off

The US Commander of the attack on Libya says even though the coalition is hitting military targets, it needs to stay within the mandate set by the United Nations. General Carter Ham briefed reporters on Monday about the difficulty in determining if a potential military target is threatening civilians.

“Instructions that we have given to our crews…is to be very judicious in their application of force,” said Carter. “Where they see a clear situation where civilians are threatened, then they are authorized to, and they have in the past, taken action to protect those civilians.

“We have not observed Libyan military aircraft operating since the beginning of coalition military operations . Libyan navel vessels have returned to or have remained in port. Since the initial strikes we have detected no emissions from regime long-range air defense radars. Air attacks have succeeded in stopping regime ground forces from advancing into Benghazi.”
