Pentagon: Libya’s Air Defense Degraded

March 21, 2011 by Michael McIntee DC, Libya, War/Peace, World Comments Off

Vice Admiral Bill Gortney says the second day of strikes against targets in Libya have “been very effective in degrading the regime’s air defense capability.” The US and other coalition forces began attacking military targets in Libya this weekend after Moammar Gadhafi refused to comply with a United Nations resolution to stop attacking his own people.

Obama Says US Military Action In Libya Will Be Limited

March 20, 2011 by Michael McIntee DC, Libya, War/Peace, World Comments Off

President Barack Obama says the US Military will offer it’s unique abilities at the front end of operation “Odyssey Dawn” to protect the citizens of Libya. International forces launched a series of airstrikes Saturday to enforce the no fly zone and prevent Moammar Gadhafi from further harming the Libyan people.

President Obama says military action will be limited and no ground forces will be deployed

“I am deeply aware of the risks of any military action, no matter what limits we place on it,” said President Obama. “I want the American people to know that the use of force is not our first choice and it’s not a choice I make lightly. But we cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people that there will be no mercy. “

March 19, 2011 by Michael McIntee DC, Libya, World Comments Off

President Obama has authorized the US Military to take action in Libya. Here is a transcript of his remarks made from Brazil where he is on a Latin American trade mission.

THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon, everybody. Today I authorized the Armed Forces of the United States to begin a limited military action in Libya in support of an international effort to protect Libyan civilians. That action has now begun.

In this effort, the United States is acting with a broad coalition that is committed to enforcing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973, which calls for the protection of the Libyan people. That coalition met in Paris today to send a unified message, and it brings together many of our European and Arab partners.

Minnesotans Rally For Libyan Freedom

February 25, 2011 by Bill Sorem Libya, War/Peace, World Comments Off

People from all over the Arab world and concerned Minnesotans rallied in solidarity with their Libyan friends at the Minnesota State Capitol today, as the cries for freedom rise in that long repressed North African country. The situation in Libya has escalated rapidly over the past week, with each day bringing increased numbers of death, violations of human rights and atrocities brought upon the local population. Members of the world community, and more specifically the European Union and the United States, have responded with condemnations and by issuing non-actionable statements from the UN Security Council. The dictatorship of Muammar Qaddafi has terrorized his people for 42 years and is determined not to leave his rule without leaving it a ‘scorched earth’.
